The Covid-19 pandemic has led to the accelerated entry of technologies into everyday life and changed the way we leave, communicate, and even talk. Thus, new social norms are emerging in learning, teaching, and working, which reshape the way we are living from working, shopping, traveling, communicating to the way we secure our privacy and data. It raises questions on the impact of emerging technologies on society; the societal challenges, barriers and incentives as well as policy and regulations needed for successful digital transformation. The session will address these issues from various aspects: privacy, education, labor-market, economic, health and wellbeing and RRI (Responsible Research & Innovation).

In an increasingly digitalised and connected world, digitalisation and artificial intelligence are gaining ground and are profoundly changing the way we live and work. The COVID-19 pandemic has given a significant acceleration to the digitisation process of the healthcare systems in the EU and Europe, pointing out all benefits and challenges to implement the European Skills Agenda and the European Social Pillar Action Plan. The health sector has been identified as an important industrial ecosystem to partner up with, under the Pact for Skills. Building of capacity and investments in digital skills and digital literacy for citizens, patients and healthcare professionals will be key for the digital transformation of healthcare with nurses having a central role to play as TRUST is a key element for deployment and exploitation.

It is necessary to create the right digital tools facilitating and supporting nurses' daily frontline work. This is an essential step for creating sustainable and resilient healthcare eco-systems. Digital solutions could create a more resilient healthcare eco-system and nurses' could be the best ally being the most trusted healthcare professionals and closest to patients. For sure digital skills and tools will never replace the work of nurses and allied healthcare professionals, but digitalisation could simplify the nursing process and as such reduce frontline nurse's workload. It is clear that to get to this, it is necessary to boost the upskilling and reskilling of nurses to give them the best digital skills that allow them to improve their outcomes.

Also, the central issue in the weeks, months and years ahead will be about TRUST (EHDS) and keeping the frontline nurses, citizens, in the centre of developments. Empowering citizens as managers of their own health, unlocking health data from local silos, and encouraging a bottom-up approach for effective interoperability will be key. Health technologies and digital solutions, combined with organisational change in healthcare systems and new skills, will only be effectively and efficiently deployed with the end-user as co-designer. Nurses as end-users must be able to influence the development of technology reflecting both usability and user-friendliness, to deliver “fit for practice” innovative solutions to empower citizens and patients, making health systems sustainable and resilient.
